The ongoing crisis in Gaza has intensified calls from the Arab League for greater accountability regarding Israel’s adherence to international law and its UN Membership obligations. While a direct proposal from the Arab League to “remove” Israel from the United Nations is not currently on the table, the bloc has significantly ramped up diplomatic and legal pressure through various channels, highlighting concerns over Israel’s conduct.
The Arab League has consistently condemned Israel’s military operations in Gaza, describing them as gross violations of international law and humanitarian principles. Their focus has been on securing an immediate and permanent ceasefire, ensuring unhindered humanitarian aid, and strongly advocating for the full UN Membership of a sovereign Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Recent actions by the Arab League include supporting the request for an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s obligations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This legal avenue seeks to clarify the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices, indirectly scrutinizing its compliance with principles inherent to UN Membership.
Furthermore, the Arab League has urged its member states to implement economic boycotts against Israel and to reconsider military cooperation, citing Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. These measures reflect a collective effort to exert diplomatic and economic pressure, aiming to compel Israel to comply with international resolutions and cease hostilities.
The process for expelling a member state from the United Nations is extremely complex and has never been successfully invoked in the organization’s history (Article 6 of the UN Charter). It would require a recommendation from the Security Council, where permanent members hold veto power, followed by a two-thirds majority vote in the General Assembly.
Despite the formidable procedural hurdles, the Arab League’s intensified rhetoric and actions reflect deep frustration. Their efforts aim to galvanize international opinion and push for stronger mechanisms to hold Israel accountable under international law, rather than focusing on an unachievable expulsion from UN Membership at this stage.
